This week, we have a special helper selecting our furry, featured Friends.  Brian James is a 13-years-old seventh grader from Strongsville, Ohio.  For a school assignment, he was asked to develop a plan of action to volunteer outside of the norm.  So this week, Brian found animals in need of loving homes and wrote articles for the Neighborhood Friend of the Week.  Take a look at what Brian found out about Shurkon:

Looking for America’s most beloved companion?  Shurkon is a golden aged, golden retriever.  Do not let her senior status fool you.  She is angelic, super nice, and loves people and other pets.

Shurkon is a large, 78-pound girl.  She is smart and has a great temperament.  This suggests that she will bond with her new guardian very well.  Shurkon cannot wait to have a place to call home.  Let your home be this angel’s heaven.

Make Shurkon the luckiest dog in the world this St.

“Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter.  Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here.  Here comes the sun, here comes the sun, and I say, ‘It’s all right’” (The Beatles).  Now that we have officially sprung ahead, it is the perfect time to bring some extra sun into your life.  This special furry Friend is ready to make everything all right, delivering smiles and memories to last a lifetime.

A happy life with you would also be a new beginning for Sunny.  She was rescued from a high-volume dog shelter as a stray.  Sunny was absolutely terrified of the shelter, making her chance of adoption very slim.  Thankfully, she was rescued and is improving by leaps and bounds.  She will be timid at first in her new home, still nervous of loud noises and rapid movements.  But once she feels comfortable, Sunny will love you forever.  She is incredibly sweet and affectionate.  Now that the ice is slowly melting, let Sunny brighten your heart.  “Sun, sun, sun, here [she] comes!”

Kiska is a Russian name, meaning pure.  And that could not be a more perfect description of our special feline Friend.  There is not a mean bone in her body.  Kiska is only full of gentleness and love.  She is very level-headed and does not leap paws first into anything.  But her sensibility is matched with acceptance and compassion.  Kiska is a treasure who can be cherished forever.

Kiska is best described as a secret admirer.  She can be very shy, and you will not see a lot of her at first.  But she will be thinking a lot about you, waiting for the perfect moment to let her personality shine.  The time invested is certainly worth the reward.  Once Kiska opens up, she will shower you with purrs and loving head-butts.  She will always be around - looking for a lap to curl up in - willing to share a talk, television show, or good book.

Meet Calvin, one of our rescued feline Friends who has been in the shelter for entirely too long.  Around the shelter, Calvin also goes by Daisy.  He is full of new life and always puts a smile on everyone’s face.  On Groundhog’s Day, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early Spring.  As it turns out, that prediction is especially true for you.  You can let a special Daisy blossom in your heart and home today.

Calvin is an adorable ten-year-old cat.  He was brought to the Lake Humane Society because he was abandoned.  As a result, Calvin can be a little shy at first.  But let him warm up and get comfortable with you, and Calvin’s personality will shine through.  He is the most calm, relaxed, and friendly cat around.  Calvin is looking for a quiet home with adults and no other pets.  But if you can give him some independence, Calvin will truly make the best companion.  He has so much love to give and deserves a home to call his own.

To adopt Calvin today, contact the Lake Humane Society in Mentor at 440-951-6122, email info@lakehumane.org, or visit www.lakehumane.org.

“Hear my soul speak: The very instant that I saw you, did my heart fly to your service” (William Shakespeare, The Tempest).  That is what happens whenever anybody meets William.  It first saved his life when William was found freezing outside in the cold Cleveland winter.  His tail was frozen, and he had a bad respiratory infection.  Luckily, William made a full recovery and is 100% today.  Now, whenever anyone sees William, their hearts fly to his service.

The problem is that this has led to a very sad statistic.  William has been in 7 different homes, but he is only 6 ½ years old.  Together, we can turn William’s fortune around.  He is a great cat with no bad habits.  He loves to play and be brushed.  He is a pretty passive guy, but would prefer to be the only kitty.  He loves to sleep in the bed and will purr endlessly when he is petted.  William just needs some stability and love, and a person who understands adopting a cat is a 20 year commitment.  In return, William will love and cuddle you forever.  So listen to another famous William today, “This bud of love…may prove a beauteous flower when next [you and William] meet” (Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet).

“If you’re lost, you can look and you will find me – time after time.  If you fall, I will catch you, I’ll be waiting – time after time” (Cyndi Lauper).  Time is a small gorgeous black male greyhound and someone who you just cannot help but fall in love with.  Best of all, he will always be there to lend a listening ear and comforting cuddle.  He will put a smile on your face, time after time.

Time has the loveliest demeanor.  He is a real sweetheart with so much love to give to his forever guardian.  Time gets along well with cats, small dogs, and especially people.  At home, he loves to play with his toys and go on walks.  But when he is done with a long day, Time is ready to use his superior snuggling skills.  In this case, love knows exactly what Time is – the perfect companion.
