Find your Sweetest at the Cleveland APL

CLEVELAND, OH - Did you know that Sweetest Day originated right here in Cleveland?  The first Sweetest Day was declared in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on October 8th, 1922 and celebrated on October 14th, 1922.  Legend has it that on that day, Herbert Birch Kingston, a candy company employee, gave away candy to those he felt had been forgotten by others; over 20,000 boxes of candy were distributed to newsboys, homeless people, orphans and others who had fallen on hard times in Cleveland.

The cats, kittens, and rabbits at the Cleveland APL are experiencing the hardship of homelessness, but we won’t let them be forgotten.  They don’t need candy, though; they need loving new families to take them home!  In honor of Sweetest Day this weekend, Friday October 19th and Saturday, October 20th, all adult cats will be available for only $5, kittens will be available for only $20, and rabbits for only $10.  (Adult cats over the age of five months are regularly $45, kittens are $95, and rabbits are $25.)

The Sweetest Day Declaration stated, “[T]he founders recognized the eternal tendency of men and women to become engaged in the rush and whirl of life, and to forget the finer, more appealing things.  On this day, next Saturday, steal enough time from the turmoil of routine affairs, to bring a bit of good cheer to those you love.”

“In keeping with the tradition of Sweetest Day, we hope you’ll adopt a sweet, underprivileged kitty or bunny from our shelter and bring good cheer to your entire family at the same time,” said Sharon Harvey, President & CEO of the Cleveland APL.  “Slow down and enjoy one of the finer things in life: the love and companionship of a new, warm and cuddly, family member.”
