Legend Lost: Hall of Fame pitcher, Cleveland icon Bob Feller dies at 92

Posted by Web Staff - email | Facebook | Twitter

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland has lost a legend. Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller died Wednesday night.

The former Cleveland Indians has been in hospice care since December 1st, battling various health issues. The 92-year-old was diagnosed leukemia back in August, then got pneumonia.

Feller spent every one of his 18 seasons in Major League Baseball proudly wearing a Cleveland Indians uniform, epitomizing the loyalty this city has shown its teams for generations. Signed by the Indians at age 17, he started 484 games and won 266 of them.  Of those wins, 19 occurred during the 1948 season when the Indians last celebrated a World Championship. He had a lifetime ERA of 3.25, threw three no-hitters- including the only Opening Day no-hitter in MLB history on April 16, 1940 - 12 one-hitters and 44 career shutouts. In 1946, he pitched a remarkable 36 complete games.

Cleveland Indians Owner Larry Dolan issued the following statement:

"Bob Feller is gone. We cannot be surprised.  Yet, it seems improbable. Bob has been such an integral part of our fabric, so much more than an ex-ballplayer, so much more than any Cleveland Indians player. He is Cleveland, Ohio.  His statue at Progressive Field is an icon. No more, no less than Moses Cleveland in Public Square.

Stand Off: SWAT team called out for a man holed up in his house

Stand Off: SWAT team called out for a man holed up in his house

Police were on scene of a standoff in the 4200 block Harwood Rd. just off of Warrensville Center Rd. in South Euclid. Police were called to a house where a man inside was threatening to harm himself.

On Thursday December 16th, 2010 at 2:47 p.m. the South Euclid Police Department was asked to check the residence of 4233 Harwood by the Lyndhurst Police Department. Just prior to this Lyndhurst Police conducted a traffic stop and the violator threw his drivers license out the window and drove off stating that his house at 4233 Harwood was on fire. Upon officers arrival there were no signs of the residence being on fire and the violator's vehicle was parked in the driveway. The vehicle was towed from the driveway and officers cleared the scene at 4:04 p.m.

At 5:15 p.m. the South Euclid Police Department received a call from a neighbor stating the resident at 4233 Harwood has thrown his television into the roadway. When officers responded and made contact with the resident of 4233 Harwood he was acting irrationally, made threats of physical harm to his family and officers on scene, refused to cooperate, and barricaded himself in the house. After 45 minutes of trying to get the resident to cooperate to no avail the SWAT team was called out.

Negotiations continued unsuccessfully for three plus hours. Eventually the resident was forced from the home using gas and was transported to Huron Road Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Charges for Aggravated Menacing and Inducing Panic will be filed in the South Euclid Municipal Court at a later date.

Council members address Sanders' exit from CMSD

Council members address Sanders' exit from CMSD

Cleveland Council members Kevin Conwell and TJ Dow shared these comments in reaction to Eugene Sanders’ announcement that he’s stepping down as superintendent of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District:

The resignation of Dr. Eugene Sanders as CEO of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District leaves us with one clear emotion – disappointment.

Just months into the massive Transformation Plan, Dr. Sanders announces it is time for his departure. And as the district works to find an interim director and eventually a new CEO, thousands of students, teachers and staff will forge ahead with uncertainty.

His departure leaves questions over leadership, commitment and direction.  Many in the community stood behind him and the board as their radical Transformation Plan took shape and launched in August.  Again, Cleveland must adjust and await the direction of yet another school CEO. Hopefully, we can bring in a leader that exudes integrity, commitment and the ability to see our children through to success.

We understand that in life one must make changes to grow and develop their careers. However, when one is a leader for our children, a role model, and someone who must set an example of commitment you cannot simply walk away. Dr. Sanders will leave Cleveland behind, but our children remain in a school district struggling to redefine itself.

Dr. Sanders had expectations for the students of Cleveland. He expected them to commit to their studies, face the everyday challenges of urban life, progress through the school system, and graduate. It is a shame that he could not commit the same to them.
