National Thrift Shopping Day | News
Cleveland, OH -Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio will observe National Thrift Shopping Day on Friday, August 16 by offering thrift shoppers 50-percent off their purchase during regular store hours.
The unofficial holiday is a fun way to celebrate an ever growing interest in thrift shopping. Amid tough economic conditions, the National Association of Resale Professionals reports the resale industry, including thrift stores, has grown by seven-percent over the past two years. The increase may be due to various economic and cultural transitions including budget belt-tightening, going "green" or a desire to seek out interesting items not available in mainstream retail stores.
Regardless of the reason, the increase in shoppers at Volunteers of America is welcome. The non-profit thrift stores' increased sales directly benefits more than 34,000 veterans, men, women, seniors and children in Ohio through shelter, housing, education, job training and supportive services.
"We could not provide vital community services without the generosity and loyalty of our donors and shoppers," said Don Markelonis, executive vice president of retail operations for Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio. "National Thrift Shopping Day is the perfect way to celebrate and say thank you for their continued support."
