For the love of the art

CLEVELAND - Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority highlights Sergeant Paul Styles of the CMHA Police Department.

Sergeant Styles is a martial arts instructor who volunteers his time to teach disadvantaged youth as well as adults at all levels.

His students range from five to 50 plus. He has been in the art for 23 years and teaching for more than 18 years.

Currently he is an instructor at Northern Wind Martial Arts School located at 8311 Superior Avenue in Cleveland.

"Coaching started for me when I used to teach basketball. I love teaching and seeing young people happy, knowing that this way of life is healthy and keeps them off the streets and out of trouble," said Sgt. Styles. "The best part to me is helping the low-income kids that really need the outlet. We make martial arts accessible to everyone and don't turn anyone away."

Benedictine High School to Forgo Flowers for Homecoming

Benedictine High School to Forgo Flowers for Homecoming

CLEVELAND, OH - Benedictine High School’s student body has taken the initiative to go flowerless for Homecoming on Saturday, October 8, 2011.  In lieu of purchasing corsages for their dates, they will be making their financial contributions to The Cleveland Food Bank.

The story behind this new style of corsages started with senior David Boothe.

David, Student Council President, suggested this idea to the administration and student body.  This was his sincere request because when he was a freshman, student council did this for him and his family.  When David was a freshman, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and the family had a long battle until recovery.  David, was so moved by his fellow schoolmates, that it became very important for him to return this act of kindness.

Now a senior, David, along with the entire student body, wish to return the act of kindness to The Cleveland Food Bank with a generous donation from the sale of a blue and white beaded bracelet in replacement of the traditional homecoming corsage.
