Stamp Out Hunger | Community Spirit
Title (Max 100 Characters)
On Saturday, May 12, 2012, the National Association of Letter Carriers will again be doing their part to help Stamp Out Hunger across America. Now in its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2011, letter carriers collected more than 70 million pounds of total food donations for the eighth consecutive year.
The need for food assistance still exists in literally every community in America, no matter how rich or poor. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual study measuring food security in the United States, nearly 49 million Americans, including more than 16 million children, are faced with the prospect of hunger on a daily basis.
To help Stamp Out Hunger this year, we are asking YOU to encourage your station’s viewers to simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable food items next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12.
The nation’s 210,000 letter carriers will then collect the donations as they deliver the mail and take them to more than 1,000 food banks and other hunger relief organizations in more than 10,000 local communities. Every donation stays in YOUR community to help your neighbors in need.
