Day 3: FBI agents testify at trial of former Cuyahoga County Judge Bridget McCafferty

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) – Two FBI agents took the witness stand Wednesday at the corruption trial of a former Cuyahoga County Judge.

Both agents interviewed former Judge Bridget McCafferty at her home in 2008, she's accused of lying to them.

McCafferty admitted she spoke to former DAS CEO Steve Pumper and former County Auditor Frank Russo about cases in her court.  She denied fixing any cases, but refused to listen to phone calls secretly recorded between her, Pumper, and a separate call with Frank Russo.

The FBI wanted McCafferty to be a star witness, she refused and lawyered up.

McCafferty's defense took over just before the day ended, they subpoenaed Frank Russo's former co-worker Destin Ramsey, the defense's first witness.  They were hoping to use Ramsey to poke holes in Russo's testimony that clearly damaged the judge's defense on Tuesday.

Not Again!: Job cuts, school closings could be hitting Cleveland Metropolitan Schools

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Cleveland Metropolitan School District's interim CEO is recommending cutting 835 jobs and closing seven schools to help balance the 2012 budget.

The plan was presented to the school board Tuesday night by Peter Raskind, interim CEO.

The schools that the CEO proposed to be closed are: Giddings, Genesis at Margaret Ireland, Union, Woodland Hills, Early Childhood Center at Charles Orr, Emile B. DeSauze and Captain Arthur Roth.  Five of those schools are under "academic emergency" status.

The district has to make up a $47.5 million deficit in the 2012 budget.  Raskind said over $4 million in operational and administrational costs would be saved with the closing of the seven schools.

Out of the 835 jobs that would be cut, 650 would be teachers.  Raskind also proposed imposing a salary freeze, hiring freeze and cuts in benefits.

Raskind said low enrollment along with reduced funding from the state and declining revenue were reasons for the gap in the budget.

The board is expected to vote on the budget plan at the next school board meeting April 5th.

TRAVEL ALERT: I-77 SB between SR 82 and Ohio Turnpike Remains Restricted

TRAVEL ALERT: I-77 SB between SR 82 and Ohio Turnpike Remains Restricted

GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Wednesday, March 23, 2011) The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is advising motorist traveling I-77 southbound to use an alternate route for their evening commute as I-77 southbound remains restricted to one lane between SR 82 and the Ohio Turnpike until further notice.

Overnight Tuesday, an ODOT engineer and the contractor working on the Valley Parkway overpass over I-77 southbound noticed a crack in a beam of the structure.  ODOT safety crews have since secured temporary supports under the overpass in Brecksville.

ODOT bridge engineers’ preliminary investigation of the incident reveals that the crack in the beam is likely to have occurred during the past week.  It is possible that a truck with an oddly shaped load traveling on I-77 southbound struck the overpass and the incident was not reported to the Department.

ODOT bridge engineers are currently developing a plan for permanent repairs to the Valley Parkway overpass.

Valley Parkway over I-77 will remain closed until further notice.  Motorists are detoured via Brecksville, Oakes and Broadview Roads.

All lanes of I-77 northbound remain open.

Crews have been performing preliminary work along four I-77 overpasses since mid-March, which includes Valley Parkway.  The $3.8 million project will replace the decks of four overpasses in the vicinity.

Six males charged in juvenile court for assaulting a 31-year-old male

CLEVELAND- Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason announced Wednesday that charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, and felonious assault, with criminal gang specifications, were filed against six juveniles, ages 10, 14, 16, 16, 17, 17, for participating in an assault of a 31-year-old male.

On November 23, 2010, a group of males assaulted a 31-year-old male walking home, in the area of W. 21st Street and Denison Avenue in Cleveland. The victim was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head. A friend of the victim, who had just dropped off the victim, saw his friend being beaten. He intervened and was assaulted.

Last week, six adult defendants were arraigned on charges of kidnapping, felonious assault, and attempted murder, with criminal gang specifications. One of the adult defendants, Gabriel Rosado, was arraigned additionally on a charge of endangering children. Rosado, 31, had his 10-year-old son participate in the assault as part of the 10-year-old's initiation into a gang. Bonds were set at $250,000. The victim was transported to Metro Health Medical Center. He had several broken facial bones and was medically induced into a coma. He remains in the hospital.

The following adult defendants have a pre-trial scheduled March 24, 2011, before Judge Ronald Suster:  Jonathan Kolesar, 22; Alexander Eckl, 22; Ronell Rudolph, 20; Willie Hodge, 19; Jonah Walker, 20; and Gabriel Rosado, 31.

Prosecutor Mason said, "Four months later, the victim remains hospitalized as a result of this savage beating at the hands of these 12 defendants. This assault is difficult to comprehend, especially the involvement of a 10-year-old boy. If the victim's friend had not come to his aide, they may have killed him."
